Finally, Vincent saw the dark shape of the observatory dome above him, sitting like a shadow on the top of the hills. He decided not to bother with following the streets for the last part of the way but to take the short cut up the hill. It wasn’t easy to climb, not only because his human eyes hardly could see anything, but the dried-out soil was loose under his feet, and the vegetation withered. It happened twice that he tried to hold on to a tree which wasn’t stable and almost fell down the slope. He lost his lamp which slipped out of his hand, rolled down and crashed on a rock. Luckily, he had extinguished the flame before his ascent. Causing a wildfire was the last thing he needed now.

The dead trees around him reminded him once again how fucked up this world had become.

What a shithole.

Eventually, his fingers found the ledge of a wall, and he pulled himself up onto it. He had reached the platform that surrounded the Griffith Observatory, and which used to allow a fascinating view over the City of Angels in former days. Now all he saw was darkness, apart from the few lights flickering in the Zone below him. On his left, he saw the black shadows the skyscrapers of Downtown cast over the wasteland.

Vincent shook off the dust, and some thorny branches from his clothes then turned towards the observatory. He had not been sure from farther away, but now he could clearly see the light burning inside the well-preserved dome.

She was there.

He hesitated for a moment. What if it was a trap? If she was not alone and had brought some of her dark friends who waited to ambush him when he entered the building? What if all she tried to do, was to lure him out of the Zone?

Vincent smirked to himself and started walking towards the light. His thoughts almost sounded like the stuff the scared inhabitants of the Zone would say. He probably shouldn’t spend so much time with Eric.

Of course, it could be a trap. But the risk made the rendezvous even more exciting.

Besides, he believed if Eurydice would have wanted to harm him, she had done so already.

The heavy double door of the observatory stood ajar. Light was shining through the gap, dispelling the bleak darkness around at least a bit.

His hand on his holstered weapon Vincent pushed the door open. It made a squeaking noise. Carefully he entered the observatory. Inside everything was completely quiet. All he heard was the wind howling around the building.

Like almost everything else in this city, the observatory had been plundered. Whatever furniture or equipment had been stored in the art deco style room he entered, everything was gone now. Bare walls were all that remained. The only light source in the large room was one candle positioned on the floor in the middle of it.
